The term ‘more able and talented’ is used in Wales to refer to pupils who are more able across the curriculum and those who show particular ability or aptitude in one or more specific areas, such as art, music, drama or sport. It refers to about 20% of pupils who require enriched and extended opportunities across the curriculum to develop their abilities in one or more areas.
The provision for these learners are facilitated by their class teachers and the MAT coordinator. Challenge and rigour are built into all lessons to ensure all pupils make progress and where possible, super curricular opportunities are offered to all pupils, for example, all pupils from years 5 to 11 compete in the Bebras challenge – a logic competition. MAT pupils are additionally offered extra workshops, opportunities and challenges. Examples include the primary math challenge, UKMT maths challenge, FMSP workshops, mural making and language workshops.
Seren learners are a small group of MAT learners that fit the Seren Academy criteria for academic excellence. Seren is a fully funded Welsh government programme available to year 8 to 13 learners. We follow the The Seren Foundation – for students in years 8-11. It is designed to support studies, help learners build confidence, and to make informed choices about their A Level subjects and route to university if that is their ambition. Pathways through the world of work, apprenticeships, sporting excellence and the creative arts will also be explored further. Opportunities within the last year include; confident speaking workshops, debating competitions, university visits, PHD tutorials and university summer schools.
For further information refer to the MAT and Seren policy.
